The winner in 2003 was Kevin Conliffe, The Tuition Centre, Naas
Kevin Conliffe taught Applied
Mathematics in the early seventies in St Vincent’s Glasnevin, Dublin, and
later, privately, in Naas. He had
been teaching for over 25 years when, following an accident, he took early
retirement. In 1997, he was one of the initiators of the Tuition Centre, Naas.
In particular, he has made Applied Mathematics accessible to students at the
Centre, complementing, rather than competing with, the work of local schools. Having consulted Applied Mathematics
teachers around the country, he wrote and privately published the textbook, Applied
Mathematics: Leaving Certificate/Foundation Mechanics for Third Level
(Friary Publications, 2002). He continues his service to Applied Mathematics as
a Leaving Certificate subject by offering courses, through the IMTA and
otherwise, from Cork to Donegal, encouraging teachers to make the subject more
widely available. |
