The winner in 2005 was Jim Cooke, Synge Street CBS, Dublin Jim Cooke is a scientist specialising in Physics. Recently, he reintroduced the teaching of Applied Mathematics in CBS, Synge Street after it had been absent from the school curriculum for a very long time. He combined his knowledge of and enthusiasm for these two subjects (as well as Mathematics itself) with exceptional ability and dedication as a teacher to achieve spectacular results in supporting students for the Young Scientist Competition. He responded imaginatively to a request from the competition organisers for projects related to William Rowan Hamilton. His hard work, often outside school hours and during the holiday period, inspired two students to investigate the numerical solution of Hamilton’s equations in a sophisticated manner. Their efforts lead to the Best Group Award in the 2005 competition. |
