For the purposes of awarding the Victor Graham Trophy, teachers who had contributed excellently in one or more of the following ways will be considered to have made significant achievement in Applied Mathematics :

  1. Writing a textbook in applied mathematics
  2. Delivering courses and/or developing materials for teachers of applied mathematics
  3. Encouraging other teachers into the field of applied mathematics
  4. Taking an initiative involving applied mathematics for transition year students
  5. Supporting students in an applied mathematics project for the Young Scientists’ Competition
  6. Playing an important role in the development of curriculum in applied mathematics
  7. Taking on further study/research in applied mathematics and its teaching
  8. Showing some other innovation in the area of applied mathematics

A strong tradition in teaching applied mathematics (without showing excellence in one of the above) would not be considered sufficient for awarding the VGT.

While it is important to encourage women’s involvement in applied mathematics, the sex of a candidate for the trophy should be considered only if the achievements of two candidates are considered to be of equal merit.

These criteria, agreed on 10th July 2001, will form the basis for the selection of the recipient of the VGT from 2001 onwards.
